Blackwork embroidery

What is Blackwork embroidery?

Blackwork embroidery, sometimes historically called Spanish blackwork, is a form of embroidery usually worked in black thread, although other colors are also used on occasion, such as in scarletwork, where the embroidery is worked in red thread.
Originally, this embroidery was done with black silk thread on white linen. The main stitches used were based on back stitch, double stitch, stem stitch and chain stitch. Then the filling was done with geometric shapes to add dimension and texture to the drawing.
